This past weekend Polish Canadian Heritage Day was celebrated to acknowledge the impact and contributions that the Polish community has had on Alberta throughout the years.

The first round of festivities took place in Borden Park on Saturday, June 8th and despite the cold and rainy weather, many came out to support and participate in the event. Amongst politicians were: Members of Parliament- Michael Cooper and Randy Boissonnault as well as MLA Dan Williams.  We are grateful for their presence.

Delicious Polish food and beverages along with great entertainment provided by various Polish folklore dance groups and Polish Saturday school students helped to make the day a successful one.  The Canadian Polish Congress Alberta Society’s II Vice President, Piotr Nicewicz, spearheaded this great event.  The Canadian Polish Congress Alberta Society is grateful for the fantastic collaboration of the Polish Veterans Society (who took over the kitchen), Knights of Columbus, Polish Canadian Women’s Federation (Branch #3), Polish Youth Yeg,  Polish Scouts/Girl Guides as well as all of our incredible volunteers.

Thank you to all of our dance groups: Polonez, Piast, Mazur, Oberek/Maly Oberek, and Lowicz and their stellar choreographers. We also wish to express our gratitude to the students of the Henryk Sienkiewicz and Maria Chrzanowska Polish Schools for their lovely recitations and to the teachers who prepared them.

We also wish to thank all of our MCs, DJs Bobby and Greg Ostapowicz during the entertainment portion of the program as well as Mike Tomas for leading our dance during “Dyskoteka pod gwiazdami”.

We continued to celebrate on Sunday with a special Mass at the Holy Rosary Parish followed by a visit to the Alberta Legislative Grounds where the Polish flag had been raised from sunrise to sunset. Our community definitely shared and celebrated their Polish spirit!
